Hang onto yer butts!

sgz_pinup_bw_web

Changes are a coming!  This week, I’ll be coming up with the new installment of the “Escape from the Vigilante Crypt” story line, continuing the tale of the origin of Ghost Zero!  Also, I’m going to be building a new site that will be a bit more webcomic-friendly…so if things look wierd over the next few days, bear with me.)

Above is the completed pinup for Anthony Schiavino’s Sgt. Zero comic, which was pretty fun to do.  I don’t draw many war scenes (yet), so this was good practice.

I’m also being interviewed this Wednesday by my hometown newspaper about the comic, which is pretty fun!  I’ll post more about that when I know more.

This is Spring Break at the university, so I have all week to work on the comic!  Yay!

More soon,

-Dave

Works in Progress

inks1

Hey, gang!  I thought I’d show an in-progress shot of a pin-up piece I’m doing for Anthony Schiavino’s character, Sgt. Zero!  I hope to have this ready for him this week, so keep your fingers crossed!  Anthony’s been getting all kinds of cool artwork for his character…go, Anthony!

Expect a few “works in progress” things on the site as well.  I plan on doing an overhaul to accomodate the launch of the second chaper of the “Escape from the Vigilante Crypt!” story!  I’m both excited and anxious about it so…er….keep…crossing your fingers?)

I’m also considering offering copies of the first chapter of the “Vigilante Crypt” in hardcopy form for you folks.  My quandry is that I think a nice, fat trade collection of the “Vigilante Crypt” story would be nice as well…but that’s quite a way off at present.  What say you?  VC chapter 1 comic now and/or VC trade later?

And, from the Wayback machine, here’s a version of Charles from back in 2003!

Oh, we were so young back then….so innocent!  Dang…I’ve been at this GZ thing for a while…..)

Stay tuned!

Creative Space

workspace_web

When I first started the Ghost Zero strip, I was working on a drafting table in our dining room.  About a year after that, we started remodeling a spare room into a study, and I was able to have an unused closet made into a small studio space for me.  I love it!  It has a custom-made, curved desk, with corresponding curved keyboard tray, and curved shelves, a hand-made, adjustable easel, a nifty, antique-looking, pendent light, and a vintage, wheeled chair that used to belong to a local doctor.

I know I love to see other artist/writer’s creative spaces, and I thought you’d get a kick out of seeing where I spend most of my evenings.)

Enjoy!

Status update!

ghost-zero-poster

Well, the “Crossroads of Solomon Strang” short is off to Moonstone for safe keeping, and I’ve been working on some stuff, primarily a pin-up for my good friend (and Ghost Zero letterer/designer) Anthony Schiavino’s character, Sgt. Zero!  I’ll post what I can when I get his permission.

Also, I feel like I need to work on continuing the “Vigilante Crypt” storyline, which I’m pondering to release as a webcomic for you guys.  We’ll see how the logistics of that work out.

I also was working on a model sheet for GZ, which has some sneak peak stuff….don’t tell anyone!  Shhhh!!

Stay tuned for more fun!

Sketch Magazine!

img_0933_web

I just received my comp copies of SKETCH Magazine  #38 from our friends at Blue Line Pro (where I buy most of my art supplies!), and I’ve got to say that the article I did for them “GHOST ZERO: Mood with Markers” looks fantastic!  There’s lots of nifty looking articles, including one from pulp-master Ron Fortier.  Interesting stuff on publishing too!  Anyway, you might want to pick one up.

Incidently, Bill Nichols, who edits the magazine is an alumn from my college, and while he was here, lived on the same street I live on.  Funny old world, ain’t it?)

Also, I just finished up the “Crossroads of Solomon Strang” short!  Look for it in Moonstone books soon!

Like Seven of Nine…

…I’m now One in Ten!  Well..maybe not EXACTLY like Seven of Nine, but Den of Geek have listed me as one of the “Ten Comic Creators to Watch Out For!”, saying:

Dave Flora, the creative mind behind the pulptastic Ghost Zero, finally gets a chance to shine. His latest Ghost Zero short is being released by Moonstone and now comic buyers will get a chance to see what webcomics readers have known for quite some time. Ghost Zero is the coolest retro pulp character in years. Ghost Zero updates the pulp genre while adding in a good mix of horror and mystery along the way. Starting with regular postings on Drunk Duck, he built a mythology and characters that are nostalgic yet relevant to today.

That’s high praise, alright…and I hope not to dissapoint!  Thanks to Marc and the crew at Den of Geek!

Also, my wife just had her birthday last Tuesday, so I thought I’d let everyone see that markers can be used for good..not just evil!

I’m finishing up the last page on Crossroads this week, so stay tuned!

Good news!

solomonlogo

I’ve persuaded (begged, cajoled, pleaded, wept….yeah, I’m not proud) Anthony Schiavino to handle the lettering/design chores for the “Crossroads of Solomon Strang!” short!  That’s his handiwork above.  I’m not much of a loner, so working with Anthony makes it much more fun for me…plus, his gift with design really makes the pages a delight to read.

I just wish I could show you some of what he’s doing with it!)  Alas…it’s all “hush-hush” until it gets to Moonstone.

We’ve been snowed under most of the week…and it’ ain’t stoppin!  Stay warm, wherever you are!
